General Information

North Wake’s cross country season begins in August and ends in late December. Track practice begins in late March and ends in late July. Some alternate locations may be scheduled throughout the season.

Practices will start at 4:30– 5:00 p.m. & end @ 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. depending on the season for Cross Country and start at at 5:00 p.m. and end @ 6:00 – 6:30 p.m for outdoor track.

Please show up on time so you have enough time to properly warm up and stretch. Practices usually last about 60 to 90 minutes may be followed by brief team meetings, where the coaches will share important club news, such as information on upcoming meets and practices and to recognize athlete accomplishments. If the athlete needs to leave practice early for any reason, it is their responsibility to inform the head coach at the beginning of practice.  

 

Athletes Perform Like They Practice

Each practice is fundamentally important. We would like the athlete to attend as many practices as is possible.. If the athlete needs to miss a practice for any reason, the coaches can give them a workout so they can practice on their own. The harder the athlete works in practice, and on his or her own outside of practice, the better they will perform in meets.

Background

The North Wake Track Club is a community track and field program that provides training for children between the ages of 6 to 18 years.  In 2007, the North Wake program was officially established by Alan E. Young.  Beginning with only one athlete, the program continues to grow to a membership of over 40+  children and a staff of approximately 5.  Each year children have the opportunity to learn the self-discipline required to not only enable children to develop their individual athletic potential but to provide them opportunities to learn lessons of discipline, leadership, sportsmanship, responsibility, and character.  They benefit from the years of dedicated coaching and running experience of individuals who volunteer their time.

What are Age-Group Divisions?

Youth competitions typically take place in two-year age divisions. These age divisions provide young athletes the opportunity to compete with other athletes of similar ability.

The age divisions for competition year 2023 are as follows:

* Per USATF Rule 300.1 (c) “Athletes must be at least seven (7) years of age on December 31 of the current year to compete at the Youth Athletics or Junior Olympic National Championships.”

** Athletes who are still 18 through the final day of the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships are eligible to compete in the 17-18 age division through that meet. This extended eligibility does not apply to cross country events.

Planning For A Track Meet

Age-group track meets can move slowly due to the number of events being offered and the large number of participates. Parents should expect to spend the good part of the day, up to 4-8 hours, in the stands. Due to that reason we strongly recommend you come prepared.

Bring lunches and snacks, a cooler with ice and plenty of water and/or good snacks. Remember that meets are held no matter the weather conditions and some meets do not have covered seating so it also a good idea to have on hand some of following items depending on the weather conditions:

Extra clothing, umbrellas, seat pads, blankets, collapsible chairs, sunglasses, pop-up tent, sunscreen, stop watches, binoculars, still and video cameras, and any other items you deem necessary.

There is normally a concession stand to purchase food and snacks at all meet sites.  As the announcer calls out the event the athlete must report as instructed so you must listen closely.

 However, never hesitate to ask questions.
